In protest of racism, police brutality, and the numerous murders of unarmed men, women, and boys--especially of African descent, who were unjustly taken from this life, in just 2014, alone. In protest of the "no indictment" grand jury rulings in EVERY SINGLE CASE! And in protest of white supremacist propaganda and privilege in the world, but especially in the United States of America where justice and equality for all is not quite the reality of its true measure and benefit, except for those who wrote the law. This is NOT an anti-police protest album...this is an anti-police BRUTALITY project. I am thankful for those who DO serve & protect as they swore to do when they made their pledge, and grateful for those who put their life on the line to keep law-abiding citizens of all colors safe, but this project was unfortunately inspired by those who have gone above the law and below the line of humanity, fueling tensions and creating even wider divides between them and the communities they are meant to serve but instead terrorize with thuggish behavior that hardly ever checked or punished. When just LOOKING as I do, but just the hue of my skin, can be the possible cause of my own, uninitiated death, there is a major problem!

This injustice must come to an end! I called this small album "The Mourning After" as a double-meaning: I created the title track, the morning after the Michael Brown/Darren Wilson grand jury verdict (which returned "no indictment" and has since been proven corrupt in its proceedings and instructions to the jury), and also as a call to action after mourning the loss of our fallen brothers and sisters (of all colors and nationalities) whose lives were taken by corrupt, violent and, many times, racist law enforcement gang who tarnish those who strive to uphold the law and have lost most of the trust of the people. Change, reform, reinvigorated participation in voting must reoccur to begin the process to address the issues, but it is a long and uphill battle when racism is essentially the cornerstone that not only built this country but how it also benefits from it, monetarily.

I don't have all the answers, and neither was I shooting for them in this project. I just felt it my duty as a law-abiding citizen, as a Black man, definitely as an artist (in a long tradition of protest songs), and as a human being who is a member of the one species called the human race.I hope this project inspires a call to action, a way to process and grieve for those directly affected, and a way to find your connection with and to the rest of humanity, through the music. May a brighter day arise from all of this and sustain for many years to come.
